In Bahia, The Bay of All Saints, that’s where it all happens when it comes to music, and that is exactly the motto for this workshop. The eleven-day workshop offers four hours of lessons on each of ten days in a group with a limited number of participants, and leaves a lot of time to enjoy Salvador and its beach nearby.
Workshop
The workshop takes place in two phases. In the mornings we’ll be focussing on the playing technique for the individual instruments, like the xekere, pandeiro or timba.
In the second phase we’ll be learning various Samba-Raggae styles, modern grooves, Batucada and original compositions by Dudu Tucci.
Evening sessions are also being planned at the Pelourinho with the local group Kizumba, so that participants will also have the opportunity to take part in the musical life of the city.
Extra Activities
Because the workshop will be taking place directly at the famous Pelourinho, the symbolic heart of Samba-Raggae and of Candomblé, you will be able to discover a lot of interesting sites and unusual features by taking a walk through the picturesque Old Town after the workshop. The sounds of music and beating drums constantly fill the air.
Here you’ll find groups that just rehearse on the streets, as well as evening concerts by established bands beside Afro-Brazilian museums and galleries that provide information about the culture and people. This is exactly where our workshop takes place. Right in the middle of the vibrant life of this city, where you can experience the colorful buzz of the locals’ activities firsthand.
We can also attend concerts or Candomblé ceremonies together with Dudu..
Before and After the Workshop
We offer a special service, free of charge, for participants who wish to come a little earlier, relax, and get to know Salvador beforehand. Excursions to the beach, walks through the city, and going to concerts before the workshop starts - all this opens us to Salvador’s unique experience and lets us immerse in its wonderful atmosphere.
We like to use our long years of experience and friendly contacts in Bahia to help participants gain access to Bahia’s rich cultural life.
Carnival!
The workshop takes place right in the exciting pre-Carnival phase, providing us with the opportunity to actually see (and hear!) the rehearsals of the great „Blocos“: Timbalada, Olodum, Ilé Ayê or Filhos de Gandhy! This is the time when the entire Old Town is full of music, in a regular fever of expectation prior to the huge celebration.
Salvador da Bahia
Salvador has been especially influenced and affected by African tradition, so whoever wants to get acquainted with the Afro-Braziliani culture will find an endless bounty of music, percussion, dance, religious ceremonies and museums.
Bahia’s entire Old Town has been included in the list of World Heritage Sites.
Guest House
Our guest house lies in the center of the Old Town with a beautiful view of Salvador da Bahia. In neat 2-bed rooms with shower/WC and TV, a garden and swimming pool, it offers a relaxing oasis of enjoyment and wellness. Directly on the scene and still a place to pull back and enjoy peace and quiet. Friends can come along for a holiday. (Please enquire about the cost.)
